There are places where the earth seems more alive than elsewhere. In Iceland, soil bubbling, smoking, loose thick clouds of acid and sulfur smoke. The volcanic rock is colorful and fixed in its forms convulsions that have made the world. Water is everywhere, often cold, sometimes burning. The island lost in the middle of the North Atlantic, at first view seems hostile. Then we discern life in many forms. Plants and animals, although relatively few different species colonize free space, constantly renewed by past and future volcanic eruptions.
